Ephesians: Sit, Walk, Stand

Seems that humans like threes. We claim the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." When children race, they say "Ready, Set, Go," and the camera flashes on the count of "one, two, three."

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians has an interesting structure of three: sit (2:6); walk (2:10; 4:1,17; 5:2,8,15); and stand (6:11,13,14). "Sit, walk, stand," states the Christian’s position and mission in the world. See Watchman Nee, Sit, Walk, Stand (Wheaton, IL: Tyndale House, 1977).

First I am made to sit with Jesus, rest in Jesus and in the full assurance of Jesus’ sufficiency. My first priority at any time is not to go out and change the world or even to change myself. I must sit.

Then I am empowered to walk in the good works that God has already created for me. By being always in Christ’s presence, my presence in the world is different from that of others. I walk in love, and light, and wisdom.

The sitting is my position in Christ, the walking is my mission among humans, and the standing is my method against the devil. I am not told to fight, but to stand. The only fighting a Christian must do is the fight of faith, the fight to stay sitting with Jesus when I want to get up and run or strike out.

I simply stand on the ground already won by Christ, occupied by sitting with Christ, and marked off by walking with Christ.
