Psalm 123: The Eyes Inside My Mind
Written by Wilma Zalabak, M.Div.

To You I lift my eyes,
The One who rules the skies.
As workers plan the pay,
As lovers dream the face,
My mind will look to God
‘Til mercy sways the rod.

My eyes have had their fill
Of scorn, contempt, and ill.
Imagination opts
For brighter food for thoughts.
The eyes inside my mind
See You whose rule is kind.

I still remember the wonder I felt when I first realized that faith happens in the mind. I knew about faith being a gift of God, and about faith being the instrument through which humans receive the gift of salvation and grow in Christ. What I lacked was an understanding of how to make faith practical in my own life. Then I discovered that one meaning of faith is the eyes of the mind, the way one thinks and imagines.

Compare another quick passage from Isaiah, one of the Old Testament Prophets. "You will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is steady on you, because he trusts in you" (Isaiah 36:3). Here trust is defined as a mind steady on God, the eyes of my mind trained on God, my imagination captured by a marvelous picture of God.

Faith happens in the mind!
