Psalm 19
Written by Wilma Zalabak, M.Div.

This is such a majestic poem in its own right, of course, that it defies capture, although both Haydn and Beethoven did awe-inspiring work on the first part of the Psalm.

Psalm 19 has a unique structure with three clear divisions. First is the hymn to nature (verses 1-6), which inspires romantics and nature lovers. Second is the hymn to God's law (verses 7-11), which has inspired at least one Scripture folk song. Third is the hymn/prayer to God's power over human error, (verses 12-14), which comforts and inspires me in my treck through my own mistakes and shortfalls.

Indeed, I pray, keep me back from presumption and arrogance, those sins which, if given a small room, will take over the whole house. Even my thoughts and my deepest secrets are open to you, Lord, and you are strong and willing to make me clean in the inner parts. Praise be to you!
